Manhattan got its name from the indigenous Lenape people who first inhabited the area. The Lenape called the island "Manaháhtaan" meaning "island of many hills". The Dutch later arrived and purchased the island from the Lenape in 1626 and named it New Amsterdam. However, in 1664, the English seized control and renamed the city New York, claiming it in honor of the Duke of York. Despite the name change, the original Lenape name of Manhattan continued to be used, eventually becoming the widely recognized name for the island and the most densely populated borough of NYC today.
Manhattan has a rich and diverse history that spans over four centuries. Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, the island was called Mannahatta by them, meaning "island of many hills." In 1626, Dutch colonists established New Amsterdam on the southern tip of the island, and in 1664, the British took control of the colony and renamed it New York. Throughout the years, Manhattan has played an integral role in American history, serving as a center for trade, immigration, finance, and culture.
