Metro Diner

Widely regarded as part of the Upper West Side, the Bloomingdale District is a quiet sliver of neighborhood, just to the west of Manhattan Valley. There's certainly an old-world charm to its streets, embodied by the classic, retro-looking Metro Diner on Broadway and West 100th Street.

Teardrop Park

These are some of the modern high-rises that make up Battery Park City, a neighborhood located in Lower Manhattan, to the west of the Financial District and World Trade Center. This photo was taken in Teardrop Park - one of the many open, green spaces (including a riverside promenade) that gives the neighborhood a relaxed, residential air - despite its own high-rises being nestled against the soaring skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan.

Alphabet City

Some call it the East Village, some call it the Lower East Side. Others, still, call it Loisaida. Whatever label you wish to apply, the neighborhood surrounding Avenues A, B, C & D is colorful and vibrant - filled with equal measures of community gardens, shops and cafés, and street art.

This photo was taken at the corner of Avenue B and East 3rd Street.

July 21: Niagara Falls

July 22: Rochester & Western New York

July 23: Seneca Falls & the Cherry Valley Highway

July 24: Alexandria Bay & The Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River

July 25: Tupper Lake, Lake George & The Adirondack Mountains

July 26: Howe's Cavern & Central New York

Manhattan - July 10-12, 2016

I've been busy! I spent the better part of the last three days (and some of the evenings, too) taking photos - I even managed to make my way to the second night of Manhattanhenge (much better than Times Square at New Year's Eve). I've also been making extensive use of my new wide-angle 16-35mm f/4L lens. It's a very difficult lens to work with - but when I get the shot right the results are ... well, see for yourself:

Also, two shout-outs are in order:

First, to Alphabet Lounge at 104 Avenue C, Alphabet City:

Great atmosphere, great vibe, great location - and amazing service. If you're ever in the East Village, take the short trip a few blocks further east and check them out!

Second, to Frank, the doorman at 260 Park Avenue South. Great, friendly guy, beaming smile - exactly why NYC is such an amazing place to walk in.

A Moment of Reflection

It's been a difficult week of tragedy - not just here in the United States, but across the world, too. I was going through some photographs from last autumn and these two jumped out as something worth sharing and reflecting upon, as both a question and an answer:

Here's to all of us acting on our better angels to create a more inclusive, rational, and just society.
